Learning to swim? Get your First Lap voucher

Living on the coast, we all understand the importance of learning to swim for our little ones. With warmer weather on the way and the beach being such a big part of our daily lives, it's imperative that my kids feel comfortable and confident in the water.

We had my eldest booked in swimming lessons since he was six months old. Although since Covid hit, we haven’t been comfortable sending the kids again until this year. To be honest, money has been a barrier for us too. With three bubs, at $20(ish) a lesson, the cost can be fairly daunting. However, the NSW Government is giving out First Lap learn to swim vouchers, which gives you $100 towards lessons for children aged three to six years who aren’t in school.

We enrolled our four-year-old and two-year-old (at the time) back into swimming at Northern Stars Swim School in Russell Vale (in the carpark of Bunnings). I was so worried that a long time away from lessons for my eldest and no exposure for my daughter would impact their confidence, but it had no influence whatsoever. They are natural water babies. In fact, my eldest graduated to the next class within weeks – so proud!

We held the little one back because the logistics were just too hard during the week as my partner works full-time. In classes for under-threes, a parent has to be in the water with the child and I could only manage one at a time. However, since my daughter’s birthday, I don’t have to go in anymore. Which I will unashamedly admit that I am thrilled about!

My kids have learnt so much already. It is so impressive how far they have come. They both can swim unassisted for about five metres and while the skills aren’t quite there, the repeated exposure to the water gives them confidence and me the peace of mind heading into summer.
