Illawarra paddlers win gold, silver and bronze at Asia Pacific Sprint Cup

The Illawarra Canoe Club's Callum Elliott and Kynan Burke have both won gold, silver and bronze medals at this year's Asia Pacific Sprint Cup.

The Asia Pacific Sprint Cup, held in Canberra from May 9 to 11, showcased the best young kayakers in the South Pacific, including those from Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Singapore.

Callum, 19, and representing Australia in the under-21 division, came first in the K4 and K2 500, second in the mixed relay and third in the mixed K4 200 and K1 1000.

Kynan, 18, and representing Australia in the under-18 division, secured gold in the mixed K4 200, silver in the K2 500 and bronze in the K4 500.

“All the teams were staying together at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra,” Callum said.

“We all kind of have had a little bit of banter, but when it's race time, we all give it a red-hot crack.”

The Asia Pacific Sprint Cup gave athletes valuable insights into the current standard of international competitive kayaking.

“It's good to see what you're up against,” Kynan said.

“Especially with your neighbours, New Zealand, they're always strong.”

“It's kind of the goal throughout the season,” Callum said.

“It feels really cool, like putting on the Australian uniform.

“You train all year to try to get selected and then once you get selected, it's about doing your best to represent your country and make them proud.”

“The K2 500 was a good one,” Kynan said.

“That helped us to qualify to do that at the World Cup and the World Championships.”

Kynan looks to take this success with him in July, as he heads to Bulgaria to compete in the Junior World Championship.

Though their ultimate goal is to represent Australia on the international stage, both athletes relished the chance to represent the Illawarra.

“A lot of the other people in the teams are from Sydney and Gold Coast, bigger kinds of hubs like that,” Callum said.

“For us to come from a smaller area, it kind of feels a little bit more special.”
