‘Exercise is medicine’ - UOW’s Fitness for Life gym group celebrate another big year

Three times a week a group of local baby boomers get together at the UOW Innovation Campus gym to increase their levels of fitness. Over the years it's also resulted in the  creation of a strong, caring social network.

Gym manager Kim Faulkner describes her over 55s 'Fitness for Life' group as "an inspiration".

"Exercise is crucial for older adults as it helps maintain mobility, strength, and balance, reducing the risk of falls and fractures," Kim said.

"Regular physical activity can also improved cardiovascular health, enhance bone density, and mitigate chronic conditions such as arthritis and diabetes.

"Keeping active doesn't just benefit us physically, it's great for our mental health too."

As well as sweating it out at the gym, the Fitness for Lifers also get together for social events; shows, movies, lunches, hikes and cycling.

On 6 December, 50 attended the annual Christmas lunch hosted by Litani's in Wollongong, where awards were given for this year's high achievers.

"Thanks to all of you, our participants. Your commitment to your health and fitness by consistently coming to the classes and the gym is amazing," Kim said.

"I am realising more and more how important it is to keep active as we age. If we don't use it, we lose it. Exercise is medicine, so keep up the good work, everyone.

"To all of our instructors, your passion for health and fitness is inspiring, so thank you so much for your awesome classes and for all you do to make our classes fun, challenging and safe."
