By Michelle Barry, the Team Leader for Child Health Promotion at Healthy Cities Illawarra
Councils across the Illawarra are recognising the value of outdoor play for our children's wellbeing and we’ve seen some beautiful refurbished playgrounds with elements focusing on risky play that appeal to all the senses and to all ages.
I’m passionate about the benefits of risky play and it’s important for us as parents to realise its potential while ensuring our children’s overall safety. Phrases like “steady feet” or “watch and think” rather than “be careful” can encourage our children to make their own decisions supporting present and future development. This also helps prevent accidents at our playgrounds as they work within their own risk and boundary limits.
Check out my recommendations for three new playgrounds that have popped up across the region.
1. Reddall Reserve, Lake Illawarra
This beautiful play space is a child’s dream! With an accessible swing zipline, sand play, musical walls and a ninja station amongst all the classic equipment, such as swings, slides, seesaws and a climbing wall, this playground is the one to check out! It helps that it’s also set against the beautiful lake landscape.
2. Fred Ball Park, Albion Park
Outdoor play is just as important as children get older and it’s great to see them being catered to with this great addition of a ninja course nestled in a residential area. It’s got a seating area and shade under the tree and the course will challenge the kids (and adults!), supporting their development of strength, balance, coordination and overall health of body and mind.
3. Edwards Avenue, Samuel Street Bomaderry
Shade! It’s always great to see new playgrounds include shade sails as it’s very sought after, especially for those of us with little children trying to keep them sun safe (and us from sweating and wanting to go home!). With swings, inclusive rocker and spinner plus a great play tower and climbing net, this is a beautiful playground to spend a few hours at, even on the hot days!
