Top 3 Parks with Off-Leash Dog Areas

By Michelle Barry, the Team Leader for Child Health Promotion at Healthy Cities Illawarra

I was a dog mum before becoming a human mum so it’s important not to forget our little loyal pooch. We love taking her to fenced off-leash areas so she can socialise with other dogs and burn off lots of energy. After being spoilt through Covid, when I was working from home, to now being home alone for most of the day, this time out for her is even more important! And we enjoy it too, with a chance to chat, meet new people and other adorable doggies to shower with pats and belly rubs!

1. Reed Park, Dog Park, Bong Bong Road, Horsley

This dog park opened in July 2020 and it’s a great addition to the area! It’s large, about 2500 square metres, and is divided into large and small dogs! With tunnels, poo bags, bins and water, this fenced area brings the dog community of Dapto and Horsley together. It’s got seating and is across from Diamond Park if the human kids also need to burn excess energy!

Bomo Dog Bowl

2. Bomo Dog Bowl, Bolong Road Street, Bomaderry

This dog park was designed after the local community highlighted the inactive Thurgate Oval and listed all the benefits of a designated space for dogs and humans! It was designed in consultation with residents and through the efforts of people power it now meets international best practices for doggie design and safety. A must for locals and those travelling in the area with their canine companions.

Oak Flats Dog Park

3. Oak Flats Dog Park, across from Kingston Street Park

A great dog park, separated into big and small dog areas. The big one has agility props and tunnels, plus plenty of space. Some kind person has also left a small paddling pool there – a big hit with hot doggies! The smaller park is simpler but with some shade, water and plenty of room to run. Oodles of Illawarra (poodle-mixed-breed owners who have a group on Facebook) meets there on Saturdays 3-4pm – the perfect afternoon activity for dogs and humans!
