Bulli SLSC wins six golds at Australia Pool Rescue Championships

Bulli Surf Life Saving Club's Gemma Humphrey and Brayden Woodford have won three gold medals each and broken two national records at the Australia Pool Rescue Championships, held on the Gold Coast from August 4 to 6.

Their performances were part of an impressive 11-medal haul – six gold and five silver – by a Bulli surf club team of five that also included Hayden Humphrey, Aliza Woodford and Stephanie Staniforth.

Gemma won gold in the U13 Female 100m Obstacle Race, U13 Female 50m Swim with 25m Brick Carry and U13 Female 50m with Fins events.

Brayden won gold in the U17 Male 200m Obstacle Race, U17 Male 100m Manikin Tow with Fins and U17 Male 50m Swim with Fins races.

To top off their wins, Gemma and Brayden broke national records: Gemma is now the Australian record holder for the Women 12-Year-Olds 25 LC Meter Brick Carry Open event and Brayden now holds the national record for the Men 15-16 100 LC Meter Manikin Tow w/ Fins Open event.

Bulli Surf Life Saving Club president Jamie Caldwell praised the entire team’s performance.

“Bulli SLSC has a long and proud history in Pool Rescue events over the past 25 years, with our current crop of athletes continuing the tradition on," Jamie said.

“It was brilliant to see all five athletes on pace with the best in Australia, including both Brayden and Gemma now holding Australian record times."

While the team savours their success, Jamie says all energy has now turned to the upcoming surf season, which kicks off in late September.

“Focus now turns – for not only these athletes, but the broader Bulli SLSC Surf Sports team – to the traditional Surf Lifesaving Surf Sports season which commences in a couple of months of time.”
