Nature Notes: weedy seadragons, a Bryde’s whale & bye-bye plastic

The Weedy Seadragon Wash-up and how citizen scientists are helping

Earlier this year, I wrote about a call-out from Professor David Booth, asking for photos and details of any weedy seadragons that had been washed up, after the East Coast Lows that swept up and down the coast.

I’ve been back in touch with him, and have written about his current theories as to what caused the wash up and how citizen scientists can actively help scientists, while helping animals and themselves for Discover magazine. You can read it here.

Single-use plastic ban

Did you know that some single use plastic items, such as straws, plastic cutlery, bowls and micro beads in body washes etc, will be banned in NSW from November 1?

Of course, there’s a whole host of exemptions but this FAQ gives a quick run down of the upcoming changes.

A very special sighting at Bass Point

Anthony Crampton spotted a mother Bryde’s Whale and her calf off Bass Point last week (see, Bass Point is the spot for whale watching in the Illawarra). They’re a small to medium-sized whale, and they only give birth every 2-4 years, making this sighting of a mumma and her baby super special.
