Nature Notes: Powerful owls, possums + a native plant sale

Powerful Owls are fledging

Many of you know I’m a sucker for the very special Powerful Owl. Australia’s largest owl is listed as vulnerable in NSW so it’s always good news when we start hearing reports of a young owls starting to fledge from the nest! Very exciting!

Possums in the roof?

Thought it was timely to post this ‘how to’ from WIRES as a guide on how to encourage possums to leave the safe and warm confines of your roof but also how to build a possum box for your yard. Possums live in tree hollows (and my garage and previously my roof before it was finally fixed!) And as we know, those are becoming a bit few and far between, so the more safe places for them to shelter, the better.

Get your native plant fix

I had the pleasure of having a coffee with Emma Rooksby of Growing Illawarra Natives the other day. Stay tuned for some very exciting news with Emma!

Just like someone finding out that their dinner guest is a doctor and regaling them with every symptom and weird twinge they’ve been having, I practically screamed at Emma about my poor and neglected backyard. She had lots of great suggestions and looks like I’m going to be heading to the monthly plant sale at Wollongong Botanic Garden to start stocking up.

Find details about the next sale on 19th August here.
