Picnic time for young and old this spring

Two local groups report on spring events.

The infamous Guides picnic challenge

By Annabel, of Helensburgh Guides

Our leader, Brogla, divided us into three groups and gave us the challenge. We needed to get starters, a main and dessert, but we only had $10 and 10 minutes to do our shopping at Coles.

My group hurried around the store, trying to choose the best snacks. We picked up some apples, crackers, cheese, and watermelon. For dessert, the others chose some yummy chocolate scrolls.

Then we returned to the guide hall. Each group took turns presenting and sharing their food. It felt like a big picnic party! It was a great evening!

Helensburgh Probus enjoys annual picnic

By Lorraine Jones

Last month the Combined Probus Club of Helensburgh and District held its annual picnic at Woronora Dam.

Fortunately, the day was sunny and not windy. Picnickers brought morning tea, and steaks or sausages were grilled for lunch to go with rolls and salad.

After lunch a new game was played, with two teams. The game was Disc Bowls. Wooden discs were thrown at a silver bowl. This game would be a good family Christmas present.

It rounded off a very happy picnic.

3 of the Best Picnic Spots for Garden Lovers

Planning your own outing this spring? Here are 3 great local gardens.

  • Wollongong Botanic Garden – As well as exploring beautiful gardens and feeding the ducks, kids will love the gated playground with its climbing jungle, slides, swings, maze and giant tower.
  • Illawarra Rhododendron and Rainforest Gardens – Explore 14 hectares of gardens in a sheltered valley south of Mt Ousley Road that supports many types of rhododendrons, including tropical varieties known as vireyas.
  • Illawarra Grevillea Park Botanic Gardens – While the main gardens are only open on a few weekends each year, volunteers also maintain a walk that the public can access every day. Look for the magnificent 150-year-old blackbutt tree in the Vine Forest.
