Thank you Illawarra for supporting the Torres Strait's Ride Revolution

In November the Illawarra Flame shared the story of a remarkable Port Kembla mum who had started a 'Ride Revolution' on the Torres Strait Islands where her husband is working.

A keen cyclist herself, mother-of-two Sarah Tedder began a fundraiser to help bring more push bikes to Waibene/Bathurst Island, where fuel is expensive and there is no public transport.

"This initiative is for all local community members, but with priority afforded to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander mothers, caregivers and children, especially those who would benefit most from access to a bicycle," Sarah said.

Sarah named the project Ride Revolution!

In just a few short weeks the campaign achieved its goal, raising more than $20,000, which will help pay for 70 bikes with baby seats and baskets.

"A huge thank you to everyone who supported the mission to bring better cycling access to the island, especially the generous people of the Illawarra. With your help, this dream is becoming a reality," Sarah said.

"Not only does bike riding offer skills in responsibility and independence, but it also builds resilience by reducing dependence on imported fuel. Together we're working to make Waibene/Bathurst Island a leader in sustainable transport, promoting a healthier and more self sufficient future for all."

Sarah said if you'd like to learn more, keep updated on progress, or find ways to support, here’s how:

  • Sign up to become a member of Mobilise TI.
  • Email ideas or specific ways you’d like to help.
  • Spread the word. The project is still seeking support, including financial contributions and in-kind assistance.

Know a qualified bike mechanic? The team is looking for volunteers willing to fund their own travel to the Torres Strait to host bike maintenance workshops.

To get in touch, email mobiliseti@gmail.com or visit the website.

Sarah's team is unable to accept mainland donations of second-hand bicycles directly but encourage you to donate to:

– Brainwave Bikes (Melbourne)

– Revolve Recycling (Sydney)

– Bikes4Life (Brisbane)

Or search “refurbished bicycles” in your area.

During 2025, Sarah's Ride Revolution team will continue work on preparing campaign rewards and bringing up the container of bicycles soon.
