Sub-branch receives grant to restore war memorial in Thirroul

By Will Lee, president of Austinmer Thirroul RSL Sub-Branch

Since 2021, $18,000 has been spent on a Conservation Report and subsequent restoration work to the Thirroul World War 1 Memorial in Woodward Memorial Park.

The preservation work completed thus far includes rectification of weathering/deterioration to the soldier, minor delamination of the stonework, and moderated delamination of the previous repairs to the stone, major losses of the coating/painting on the lettering, lifting of several tiles and the removal of biological growth.

A recent grant of $9933 from the NSW Government’s Community War Memorials Fund will continue the restoration work, removing and replacing old patches with new synthetic stone.

The Sub-Branch is planning a recruitment drive, ex-service members interested in joining may contact austinmer-thirroulsb@rslnsw.org.au or phone 0419 000 061.
