Wollongong City Council media release: 7 November 2022
From Monday 7 to Sunday 13 November, we’re celebrating National Recycling Week and calling on our residents to refresh their recycling habits.
We’re encouraging residents to make small changes to improve how they recycle every day to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in your red-lidded bin and, eventually, in landfill.
For some people that can mean learning how to tell what types of plastics can and can’t be recycled through their yellow-lidded bin. For others this might be learning how and where to safely recycle fridges and whitegoods. Other recyclers may want to learn how to set up a worm farm at home to turn food waste into compost.
Wollongong City Acting Lord Mayor Councillor Tania Brown said that there were so many ways residents could improve their recycling practices.
“Recycling is about more than putting cardboard and rinsed out tin cans into your yellow-lidded bin,’’ Cr Brown said.
“Every little bit counts when it comes to reducing our impact on the environment and the small steps we take as individuals can make a difference as a collective whole.
“Part of our message this National Recycling Week is don’t let perfect be the enemy of good! We’re asking residents to start making small changes to how they recycle. That could mean dropping off your batteries at the Community Recycling Centre or at one of our participating libraries that have a Community Recycling Station.
“It could also look like simply washing out your food containers properly before putting them in the yellow-lidded recycling bin. Or even buying second-hand at the Garage Sale Trail event this November. Whatever you decide, start small and make a difference this National Recycling Week.”
How to get involved this National Recycling Week?

Save the date! The Garage Sale Trail is back this month! Held over two weekends (12-13 November and 19-20 November), the Garage Sale Trail is two big weekends of garage sales held simultaneously.
If you have stuff you’d like to sell, you can still register by visiting the Garage Sale Trail website.
Recycle household problem waste
The Community Recycling Centre (CRC) at Whytes Gully accepts many household items such as car and household batteries, paint and paint tins, aluminium, gas bottles, white goods, and electronic waste for free.
For the full list on what you can and can’t recycle at the CRC, visit our webpage.
We’ve also made it easier to recycle problem waste such as x-rays, household batteries, mobile phones and smoke alarms. We’ve set=up Community Recycling Stations (CRS) at Wollongong, Thirroul, Corrimal, Dapto and Warrawong Libraries.
