Making beer while the sun shines, Tarrawanna brewery named 'Climate Zero Heroes'

The owner operators of a boutique Tarrawanna brewery have been hailed as 'Climate Zero Heroes' for their sustainability approach to running the business.

Anna Suthers and Billy Barnetson run the popular Reub Goldberg Brewery and their efforts have been celebrated by Wollongong City Council to mark Global Climate Change Week.

Council's new campaign showcases everyday people who are taking steps to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, save money and live more sustainably.

Anna and Billy have taken many steps top reduce their carbon footprint, starting with the installation of 80 solar panels on their roof.

"If we didn't have the solar panels we would actually be paying about $1,000 a month more," Billy said. "It's actually cheaper in the long run."

The brewery has taken many steps to reduce its weekly waste.

"We are licensed for 150 people and we create such a small amount of waste that we can fit all of our waste into three 80 litre bins," Billy said.

"A lot of our brewers waste is used for livestock and the liquid waste gets used for permaculture at our local primary school."

Anna said, "Our packaging is super low. Our only packaging is the stainless steel growlers. You bring in your empty and you get a freshy out of the fridge."

The couple say their sustainable approach to running their business is also paying dividends through growing patronage.

"The community see you doing a good thing and they want to be a part of it," Billy said, and according to Anna "they feel better about spending their money here as well."

Wollongong's Lord Mayor Cr Tania Brown says everyone has a role to play in creating a more sustainable city.

"These net zero heroes are doing their bit, their way, and every bit counts."

Cr Brown said that in addition to empowering the community, Council will continue to lead by example as it aims for net zero emissions for council operations by 2030.
