WCC MEDIA RELEASE: 12 November 2024

Wollongong is home to some amazing unsung heroes and we’re seeking our community’s help to find them for the City of Wollongong Awards.

Nominations are currently open for the city’s annual awards that celebrates the people and organisations who make our city a better place to live, work and play.

Earlier this year, we acknowledged an extraordinary group of people which included Citizen of the Year Dr Aunty Barbara Nicholson, Senior Citizen of the Year Dr Munir Hussain and Young Citizen of the Year Morgan Clarke

Amongst our 2024 recipients was Dr Aimee Silla for the Innovation Achievement Award. Dr Silla is a highly successful researcher who has dedicated her life to wildlife conservation.

“I was thrilled to receive the City of Wollongong's Innovation Achievement Award for my research specialising in the development of reproductive technologies including IVF as tools for the conservation of threatened frogs,” Dr Silla said.

“I am passionate about mentoring and inspiring future generations and the award opened opportunities for me to further engage and inspire the community."

Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Tania Brown believes the City of Wollongong Awards is a great opportunity to bring our local heroes to light.

“I’ve been honoured to attend the City of Wollongong Awards a number of times. I will never get over the dedication and inspiring work that our people do every day. It makes me proud to be from Wollongong,” Cr Brown said.

“We’re inviting our community to put their nominations in for the 2025 Awards. It’s important we applaud and uplift our fellow locals who make a meaningful contribution to our city, whether it’s a family member, friend or a community group. We find with these awards that, more often than not, it may be someone who flies under the radar that is a worthy recipient as their work is heartfelt by our city and beyond.

“There are 11 categories to highlight the diverse achievements of local people including the arts, sports, innovation and environment. We look forward to hearing more about our local heroes.”
