What are the benefits of electrification?

Each week, a team member from local volunteer group Electrify 2515 will answer a key FAQ about the potential community electrification pilot. To ask them a question, contact at electrify2515@gmail.com

Q: What are the benefits of electrification?

If we electrify the “average” Australian household, with solar panels on the roof, a home battery, electric vehicles in the garage, and replace gas appliances with efficient electric ones, we can save thousands per year in household costs. The efficiency gains from new appliances and vehicles drops energy use significantly to just ~37 kWh, and Australia’s world leading solar is cheap enough to power the house while saving money.

How is this beneficial? If we were to electrify all the homes in Australia (that is, to switch to more energy-efficient appliances, and transition away from fossil fuels like gas, oil and coal) we would reduce our national carbon footprint by 28-42% (45-70% if we include small businesses), which will help create a safer climate. If that is not enough of an incentive here are a few more:

- By 2030 an electrified household will save on average $5000 every year on their energy and fuel costs

- Electrified households will reduce a range of health risks associated with gas cooking, gas heating and  cars

- As a nation, making more electricity will help us grow new export industries and jobs
