Changes to traffic management around the Wollongong education precinct

21 March: Transport for NSW will be making changes to the current temporary traffic management plan around the University of Wollongong and TAFE NSW following a review of morning traffic volumes.

These changes will be implemented weekdays from Monday 24 March until Friday 11 April 2025 between 7.45am and 9.15am.

Under the changes all traffic exiting the M1 Motorway southbound at University Avenue will be diverted left to make a U-turn at the eastern roundabout. University-bound motorists will then be detoured to the southern (previously western) access route via Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road.

Motorists travelling northbound on the M1 Motorway using the Gwynneville exit will detour to the roundabout at Northfields Avenue to access Irvine Street.

Motorists needing to access the M1 northbound from Keiraville and Gwynneville are encouraged to do so from Robsons Road at West Wollongong to avoid delays.

Upcoming day closures on Bulli Pass

6 March: Motorists are advised that Bulli Pass will be closed for two days next week for maintenance work to be carried out.

Work will include maintenance of guardrails, signs and safety ramps, trimming vegetation, clearing gutters and drains, resurfacing the road and new line marking.

Bulli Pass will be closed in both directions for two days between Lawrence Hargrave Drive and the M1 Princes Motorway from 9am to 3pm Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 March, weather permitting.

If work is delayed due to wet weather, work will be carried out on Thursday 13 March, 9am to 3pm.

During work, detours will be in place via either Lawrence Hargrave Drive or the M1 Princes Motorway and Memorial Drive.

Motorists are advised to allow an additional 20 minutes travel time, drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Residents within the closure area will have access to their properties at all times under the guidance of traffic controllers.

Windang Bridge improvement work continues

Transport for NSW will continue improvement work on Windang Bridge next month to ensure the bridge remains safe now and into the future.

Transport for NSW Regional Director South, Cassandra Ffrench, said the next stage of the project will involve removing sand from the bed of the lake and placing rocks underneath the bridge to provide support to the piers.

“Concrete repair work will also be carried out on the piers to maintain their structural stability,” Ms Ffrench said.

“This latest essential maintenance further builds on significant work carried out in recent years to address serious scour, or sand erosion, around the bridge piers which was threatening the bridge’s structural stability.

“In 2023 we started extensive repairs to the concrete bridge piers, including patching areas of damaged concrete, and since May 2024 we have successfully rehabilitated 10 of 32 bridge piers.”

This latest work will be carried out from Monday 10 March, weekdays between 7am and 6pm and on Saturdays between 8am and 1pm. There will be no work on Sundays or public holidays. It is expected to take up to nine months to complete, weather permitting.

Work will be based out of the compound site within the Fern Street boat ramp car park, on the bridge's north eastern side.

During work hours, traffic control will be in place intermittently on the boat ramp, with some parking spaces used to facilitate the delivery of machinery and materials.

Lake Illawarra’s entrance will remain open to boats, however there will be certain areas under the bridge where boats cannot go.  Channel markers will be in place to advise boat operators which channels are in operation.
