Thanks to Endeavour Energy's spokesperson for providing the following information for April 2025's article, Hot tip: Cut costs with the thermal battery already in your home.
For decades, our electricity supply system was based on one-way energy flows from large generators to customers supported by flat tariffs based on total consumption over a billing cycle.
Today, however, the landscape has dramatically changed with one in four residential customers owning solar panels, and the average size of solar systems continuing to grow. By 2034, it’s projected that half of all homes will have solar systems, while one in three are expected to have a home battery.
To adapt to these changes and ensure the network remains efficient, affordable, and future-ready, Endeavour Energy introduced new “solar soak” tariffs which are the most cost-effective distribution network tariff ever offered by Endeavour Energy to electricity retailers. These new tariffs were introduced on 1 July 2024 for residential and small business customers with smart meters.
Under the new tariffs, the use of the Endeavour Energy network is free between 10am and 2pm every day, meaning we do not charge electricity retailers for their residential and small business customers using our network during these hours. The aim of these tariffs is to encourage electricity retailers to pass these savings so:
1. customers without solar systems benefit from using the abundant solar power available in the middle of the day to meet their needs
2. incentivise customers who want to invest in solar and batteries to generate, store and share their energy in a way that improves affordability for everyone, while ensuring a fair distribution of network costs.
While Endeavour Energy does not bill customers directly, these new network tariffs help electricity retailers craft tailored energy plans for their customers supplied from the Endeavour Energy network.
As we operate under a regulated revenue cap set by the Australian Energy Regulator, these new tariffs do not result in any increase to Endeavour Energy’s revenue (which is approved by the Australian Energy Regulator).
