The Canadian Rockies: why it’s the go-to destination this Spring!

You’ve seen it on TV and all over social media: the surreal blue lakes, with the all-too-perfect mountain backdrops. It’s enough to make you want to drop everything and jump on the next plane. But be warned, Canada will steal your heart in more ways than one.

The Canadian Rockies have something for everyone. The Rocky Mountaineer Train is a bucket list item and easily accessible (and pairs nicely with an Alaskan Cruise). There’s a vibrant party scene for young people, and with tour groups such as Trafalgar, G Adventures and Contiki you can feel confident travelling alone. The Rockies is also a family friendly playground, with car hire and accommodation packages, or campervan options for the adventurers who want to immerse themselves in nature.

The Scenery

Visiting Banff and Lake Louise is like spending each day in a spectacular postcard. Whether you’re kayaking on blue lakes that mirror the mountains in summer, or ice skating on a frozen lake surrounded with more snow than you can imagine, Canada’s beauty lasts year-round. The best part about travelling to Canada in our Spring/their Autumn is you’ll likely get to experience the best of each season within a week. Temperatures can change drastically in the mountains – we’ve had clients building snowmen in the morning, then by the afternoon they’re hiking in the sun with just a t-shirt on!

The Food

Did someone say deep-fried pickles? They go down a treat after a few beers. The best Canadian dish in my opinion is poutine (fries, smothered in gravy and cheese curds). Canadian food may not be the healthiest, but with all of the adventuring you’ll be doing, you won’t have to beat yourself up over calorie intakes. So breathe in that mountain air, and maybe treat yourself to a Canadian maple doughnut from Tim Horton’s while you’re at it.

The People

It’s a fact that Canadians are the nicest people on earth. If you need help, go ahead and ask, because people in Canada are usually happy to lend a hand. The people you’ll meet in The Rockies will steal your heart from the very beginning with their wonderful hospitality and charming accents, eh!

The Animals

The Rockies are an animal lover’s dream. There’s nothing like seeing a grizzly bear from your accommodation window to wake you up. If bears aren’t your thing, then you can definitely count on a whole bunch of elks and deer hanging around too. The woods are filled with marmots and big-horned sheep, as well as the occasional cougar. Wolves, coyotes, beavers: the list goes on. So once you’re there, look into doing some hiking and be sure to pack your camera. Also some bear spray. That’s not a joke, you might actually want to buy bear spray.

You will see Elk!

So what are you waiting for? Go and see those glowing lakes for yourself. Hike those mountains. Make some wonderful friends. See the wildlife and just be prepared to fall in love with The Canadian Rockies.
