Q&A with photographer James O’Connor

Photographer James O'Connor, 48, is a Lake Illawarra local who runs his own business, James Patrick Photography.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a freelance videographer/photographer who works on documentaries, events and music. I moved down to Wollongong 3 years ago and love the outdoor lifestyle the area offers. I've been very lucky to continue my occupation down here and work with a number of local businesses and events.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I started shooting festivals for brands and thought this could be something I make a living around. I've diversified and pivetted a lot over the years but still work a lot in music.

Best part of your job?

The travel. I've been lucky to travel extensively around NSW on assignment, a lot of interstate and some European trips. I even travelled to Belgium earlier this year to cover a music festival for a music documentary I am producing.  I love to travel so it suits me.

Most challenging?

Picking the music! Have spent countless hours trawling through online music libraries trying to find the right track. There's a lot of bland stock music out there.

Who has helped you along the way?

I have a number of peers and colleagues who I can turn to when I need advice or just a confidence boost.

Highlight of your career so far?

Launching my documentary Mining The Blue Mountains to a live audience in a theatre. The documentary has gone on to win awards and been viewed over 25,000 times!

What is your favourite local way to relax?

Kayaking on the Lake Illawarra, it's so beautiful and quiet out there. The Lake is a surprisingly under-utilised space given its beauty.
