Let’s get back to business

Business Illawarra media release: 9 September 2021

The region’s peak business organisation, Business Illawarra, says business owners across the Illawarra will be rejoicing with the news many should be reopening their doors in just over a month.

The NSW Government has released its re-opening roadmap, which sets a path for businesses in the hospitality, retail and fitness industries to reopen to double-vaccinated customers. This can occur from the Monday following NSW reaching the 70 percent ‘double dose’ milestone, currently expected to be in mid-October.

When the state hits the 80 percent double dose target, predicted to be in early-to-mid November, the government has committed to open up further freedoms on international travel, community sport, major events and other areas.

Business Illawarra Executive Director Adam Zarth said the Illawarra business community had been crying out for a clear roadmap, and renewed calls for locals to help make it happen by getting both doses of a COVID vaccine.

“Although we have all been through a very tough time, it is terrific to have a defined pathway forward; although one that relies on the community to play its part and get vaccinated,” said Mr Zarth.

“Illawarra businesses can start planning their re-opening right now, they can order stock, engage staff and re-engage with their loyal customers. Our local tourism businesses will be celebrating with domestic travel allowing many to capitalise in the countdown to Christmas.”

“It’s been incredibly difficult for businesses during this Delta outbreak because the bills have kept coming in, without any revenue.”

“Once we are double-vaccinated, it will be really important that we in the community support local businesses in huge numbers from mid-October, and adhere to the COVID Safe rules in place.”

“I know business owners will also need to be vigilant in ensuring staff and customers play by the rules and ensure Public Health Orders are adhered to, but when they aren’t, NSW Police have been clear that they will deal with any breaches.”

“Together, we can make October the start of the Illawarra getting back to business, but that can’t happen until we do our bit and #VaxTheIllawarra,” Mr Zarth said.
