4 top Italian restaurants around Wollongong

When it comes to culinary delights, Italian cuisine is often the most popular thanks to its rich flavours, tantalising aromas and exquisite combinations of fresh ingredients. Italian restaurants have captivated food lovers worldwide and our home town is no exception. It is no wonder considering that the 1966 ABS Census showed that, at the peak of Italian immigration, there were 5809 Italian-born people living in the Illawarra. We have a strong historical link with Italy.

In no particular order, because who doesn't love the comfort of a woodfired pizza or mouth-watering pasta on a cold autumn day, here are my favourite Italian restaurants across the Illawarra.

  • Franco Pizza Bar, Thirroul – This hatted restaurant offers a tasty Italian-inspired menu, designed to be shared.
  • LUPA Pizzeria and Bakery, Wollongong – A traditional Italian pizzeria, serving authentic woodfired pizzas, fresh homemade pasta, a range of antipasti and gorgeous Italian desserts.

  • Kneading Ruby, Wollongong – A modern take on a pizzeria, with rustic dishes and traditional pizza made with fresh, locally sourced produce. They also have an impressive wine and cocktail selection.

  • Il Nido Trattoria Pizzeria, Balgownie – Here you’ll experience the Giuliani family’s famous traditional Italian hospitality and enjoy home-style cooking from their Northern Italian heritage.
