Among the myriad culinary flavours the Illawarra has to offer, the humble burger has carved out a special place in the hearts and stomachs of locals and visitors alike. I'm always on a quest to discover the best burgers any region has to offer. Here are four of my favourites.
- His Boy Elroy – Awarded Australia's Best Burger Bar in 2022, His Boy Elroy has some of the best burgers I’ve ever had. The restaurant in Wollongong is super-relaxed and family-friendly, but they also offer delivery and frequent food truck opportunities across the Illawarra.
- Buster's Tavern Thirroul – The self-claimed 3rd best pub in Thirroul was previously known as Papi's Burgers. Now the pub has shifted to focus on family dining but it still has their delicious burgers on the menu and frequent burger nights.
- 2 Smoking Barrels – These burgers tap into the Texan-style barbecue and the owners pride themselves on three things: good meat, good timber and hard work. Try the classic burgers or beef brisket rolls in either the restaurant or food truck that frequents our home town
- Sneaky Burger – With restaurants in Nowra, Wollongong and Albion Park, this concept behind this group was to bring gourmet, restaurant-quality food to the region that was affordable and time efficient – something to rival the fast-food options. Here you can enjoy everything from your classic cheese burgers to a loaded Fat Shancez.
