What on Earth is Scroggin?

A bit of a different What on Earth Wednesday today. But I have to ask, do you know what on earth scroggin is? Some people refer to it as trail mix but whatever you call it, at the end of the day, it’s handfuls of goodness, designed to keep you going when you’re out on a hike or on a bit of an explore.

Scroggin is an acronym. Kind of. It’s an acronym where you can assign pretty much whatever you want to the letters to make it work for you. But ultimately you want something high energy, that’s salty, sweet and crunchy to keep you going throughout the day. And you might even sneak in some things that aren’t on the top of your ‘most loved’ list, but you know are good for you. Seeds, I’m looking at you.

Sultanas or Seeds

Chocolate or Coconut

Raisins

Orange peel or Oats or even Other things

Grains or Ginger

Glucose or Goodies (yes, this is your excuse to add in lollies!)

Imagination

Nuts

Most recipes, and the term recipe is used loosely here, follow the formula of 40% nuts, 30% dried fruit and 30% chocolate and goodies. With chocolate, consider something with a coating like Smarties of M&Ms so you don’t end up with a gooey, chocolatey mix on a hot day (although that sounds delicious if you ask me!)

Nuts: Raw or roasted Almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, cashews, macadamias and good old peanuts

Fruit: Dried mango and apricots, banana chips, raisins, sultanas, currants, goji berries all work well

Grains/Goodies: Popcorn, pretzels, jelly snakes, chunks of dark chocolate, oven roasted chickpeas

Throw your choice of ingredients in a small bag or container and off you go.
