Media release: PKDIY Renewal Underway: Community-Led Initiative Transforms DIY Port Kembla Skatespace
The Port Kembla DIY skatespace is set for a transformation, thanks to the relentless efforts of its local community. Spearheaded by the Port Kembla Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PKCCI) plans for a permanent skatespace have taken a significant step forward.
In February 2023, the PKCCI secured a $500,000 grant from the Port Kembla Community Investment Fund to realise their vision. While still continuing to work proactively with Council to ensure necessary approvals are in place, Revolution Action Sports Concepts has been selected to oversee the project. Revolution Action Sports Concepts are renowned for their expertise in creating top-tier skateparks across southern Sydney. Will Mitry, a dedicated local and project manager representing PKCCI, expressed his enthusiasm for the community's next chapter.
"This marks an exciting time for Port Kembla. The new skate facility and accompanying basketball court will serve as a community hub for generations," Mitry commented.
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said it was positive to see things moving forward for local skateboarders in Port Kembla.
“We have a passionate skateboarding community in our city and I know there will be many thrilled people with the announcement that Revolution Action Sports Concept will be overseeing this community-led project,’’ she said.
“It’s an exciting next step in this long-term project to have a well-planned and exciting space in Port Kembla.’’
Councillor Ann Martin who advocated to have the PKDIY became a permanent facility back in 2022 is pleased to see the community project come to life.
“It’s great to see these positive outcomes when the community and Wollongong Council work together” Cr Martin said.
To enrich community engagement, PKCCI has partnered with BighART, a leading arts and social change organization. BighART will receive an additional $50,000 annually over the next three years to curate Skate of Mind events at the Port Kembla DIY. These events, which will need to work through Council’s event approval process, it intends to blend skateboarding, music, art, and culinary delights to unite and celebrate local talent.
Lincoln Smith of BighART shared his enthusiasm, stating, "We look forward to collaborating with the Port Kembla community to honour the legacy of PKDIY and embrace the potential of the new skate space."
The community is invited to celebrate this milestone with the PKDIY Renewal Jam on March 16th at 2pm, followed by a skate video premiere at The Servo from 5pm.
"It's crucial to commemorate the PKDIY space before its transformation in the coming months. We are eager to collaborate with BighART to foster community spirit and drive positive change through their programs," added Mitry.
