This Balinese tradition to bring people together for a free meal and fundraiser
Mesangkepan is a Balinese tradition that brings everyone together on common ground to provide support for the community.
In keeping with tradition, Balinese Spice Magic will be hosting Mesangkepan, this time in support of MCCI Refugee Support (formerly known as SCARF), who provides settlement support to people from refugee backgrounds living in the Illawarra. The event will be held at Balinese Spice Magic on Sunday 10 September, 11am-2pm, offering a free meal to any community member, but also raising funds through a "pay as you feel" system.
"Mesangkepan is similar to a soup kitchen, although the meals provided on the day are far away from just soup. We believe that everyone has a right to a nutritious and hearty meals, and this is our way to share our blessings and give back to the community and bring comfort one meal at a time.
"I have been a long-time supporter of MCCI Refugee Support. As an immigrant, I understand how difficult it is to start a new life in another country and leave all that you knew and familiar with behind," said Jules, Balinese Spice Magic owner.
"MCCI Refugee Support seeks to empower community members giving them the tools to navigate Australian systems and connect with others in region to find a sense of belonging.
"This fundraising and community event provides MCCI Refugee Support with an opportunity to bring people together while raising funds for programs so we can continue to provide support to community members in the Illawarra.
"We have seen a huge increase in food, energy and housing expenses during the last year and when you combine these pressures with all the challenges already faced by people from refugee backgrounds, this is a critical time for providing support systems," said MCCI General Manager
