Artists Break the Bias for Women’s Equality
International Women's Day is celebrated annually around the world on the 8 March to mark a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
Now in its 21st year, the annual International Women's Day Art Exhibition celebrates female artists from the local Illawarra region. Responding to the theme ‘Breaking the Bias’, 32 local artists have created a range of artwork that embraces women's equality.
The diverse artists come together to interpret the theme in a variety of artwork styles including sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, drawing, digital media, ceramics, limited edition prints, and paintings. The one commonality is their gender and their personal experience as a woman.
Moira Kirkwood, artist: “I paint intuitively and love the eye to meander, as though in a marketplace of colour. I have the luxury of painting to suit myself, whilst supporting myself with other paid employment. This is a privileged position that not everyone can enjoy.”
The International Women’s Day exhibition will run from 2 March – 20 March at Project Contemporary Artspace at 255 Keira Street, Wollongong. All artworks will be available for sale.
The opening celebration will be held on Saturday 5 March at 6pm. Enjoy entertainment including performance poetry and live music from Nikrann, a musical trio that explores the stories of women through a musical journey across the centuries - from the classically pure timbres to captivating folk tunes- sharing works of female composers from across globe.
The opening of the exhibition will be officiated by special guest Dr. Janys Hayes, an accomplished theatre director, actor and teacher of acting.
