The Illawarra Association for the Visual Arts (IAVA) is excited to present Crossing Paths, an exhibition celebrating the vibrant work of 25 talented local artists. This exceptional collection will be on display at The White Cottage Gallery, set in the historic Retford Park, Bowral, from 20 February to 23 March.
The exhibition will feature a diverse range of contemporary artworks by IAVA members, including painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media. Each work explores the unique perspectives of the artists, offering a window into the creative spirit of the Illawarra region.
Retford Park, the venue for this year’s IAVA exhibition, is a fitting backdrop for an event that celebrates local creativity. Built in the 1880s, Retford Park is a grand country estate surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, with a rich history that intertwines with Australia’s artistic heritage. The estate has long been associated with cultural engagement, particularly through its connections to prominent Australian artists and art collectors. From 1963 - 2017, Retford Park was owned by James Fairfax AC, who was known for his passionate support of Australian artists. Today, the estate is owned and managed by the National Trust of Australia (NSW), preserving its legacy as a space where the arts are celebrated.
“IAVA is incredibly grateful for the National Trust’s support in bringing this exhibition to life at Retford Park. The historic connection of this venue to the arts adds a layer of depth and significance to the Crossing Paths exhibition,” said Melissa Ritchie, President of IAVA. “We invite visitors to not only enjoy the stunning works of our local artists but also to connect with a place that has been an integral part of Australia’s artistic history.”
A special opening event will take place on Saturday 22 February from 2pm to 4pm, offering a chance for guests to meet the artists, discuss their works, and enjoy drinks amidst the beauty of Retford Park. This informal gathering will provide an opportunity to engage with the creative minds behind the exhibition and discover the inspiration behind their artworks.
