The dress code is pink, pink and more pink, at Council’s free outdoor movie nights this weekend.
Held back-to-back on Friday 19 April and Saturday 20 April, Greta Gerwig’s 2023 Barbie will play in all of its flamboyant glory on the big screen in Dapto Square and MacCabe Park, Wollongong.
As this will be the final movie night at both locations, we’re inviting everyone to join us for a movie under the stars. To celebrate the end of the movie night series, there will be free gelato, free popcorn and a pre-movie, as well as a lucky door prizes for those wearing their Barbie-core best.
The upcoming movie nights are presented by Wollongong City Council and are part of the Safer Cities: Her Way program.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that the Safer Cities: Her Way program is a collaborative partnership between Transport for NSW and Council that aims to improve perceptions of safety for women, girls and gender diverse people.
“The program focusses on a range of different pilot interventions to enhance our public spaces and transport hub precincts and make local spaces feel more welcoming for everyone in the community,” Cr Bradbery said.
“Our Barbie movie marathon will be held in the Dapto Square on Friday 19 April, and in MacCabe Park on Saturday 20 April, is our way of finishing the program with a bang. Council’s movie night series has been well attended, and with any luck the weather will hold out so we can have one last fun community event.
“There’s no need to book to attend. These are free events; we just ask that you follow our events on Facebook to let us know you’re planning on coming along. It’s also where we’ll provide updates if the weather gets the better of us.
“Don’t forget, now that it’s April, it’s likely to get a little colder in the evenings, so be sure to bring a blanket or jumper with you as well. And if it’s a pink jacket, even better!”
Transport for NSWs A/Executive Director, Cities Revitalisation and Place Brooke Wharton said it’s great to see such amazing interventions that directly respond to feedback from women, girls and gender diverse people.
“Through the program, we heard that local women, girls and gender diverse people in Wollongong would feel safer with improved lighting, having more people around and public spaces that feel more cared for.
“Council is delivering on all of these ideas through trial interventions in Wollongong CBD, Dapto and Port Kembla Town Centres helping women, girls and gender diverse people to walk and cycle more often. The popularity of these activations serves as a testament to the program's positive impact.”
