2021 saw the inaugural running of the Dean Mercer Dash.
As COVID restrictions were easing, Thirroul SLSC, with the blessing of the Mercer family, ran a 3km offshore board paddle between Thirroul and Sandon Point.
Given the success of the inaugural event, the Dean Mercer Dash is now an annual 5km Board Paddle event that is held on the last Sunday in October, to honour a legend of SLS, and Thirroul SLSC Life Member, Dean Mercer.
The race is to commemorate the passing of Dean Mercer in 2017.
Twice Australian Ironman Champion, Dean also won many paddle board titles including the NSW State Cadet, Junior and Open before concentrating on the ironman event throughout the remainder of his stellar career.
As a teenager in the late 1980's his time of 8’54” for the time trial of 1.26 kilometres from Sandon Point to Thirroul SLSC remains unbeaten by all comers.
The new triangular course from Thirroul to Sandon Point is named in his honour. A fitting tribute to a relentless competitor and friend to all who knew him.
