Wollongong City Council is urging residents looking to offload hard-to-move chemical waste to take advantage of Sunday’s free chemical clean out event at Fairy Meadow.
The Household Chemical Clean Out – at the updated location of Fairy Meadow Surf Club car park - provides the opportunity for the safe removal of hazardous household chemicals that could pose environmental and public health risks if not properly disposed of.
The free service, accessible via the Fairy Meadow Surf Club car park, allows residents to drop off household quantities of:
- garden, pool and hobby chemicals
- household cleaners
- paint
- poisons
- batteries
- fluoro lights
- fire extinguishers
- gas bottles
- motor oils, fluids and fuels
- smoke detectors.
‘Household quantities’ are a maximum 100L of paint, up to 10kg of household batteries and up to 20L or 20kg of other items.
Council reminds anyone looking to drop off chemical waste to take care in transporting it, to never mix different chemicals, ensure containers are clearly labelled and properly sealed, and where possible keep all chemicals in their original containers.
See Council's website for more tips on what you can bring and how to carefully transport them.
If you are unable to make it on Sunday the above listed items – excluding garden, pool and hobby chemicals, household cleaners and poisons – can be dropped off at our Community Recycling Centre at Whytes Gully, which is open every day of the year except Christmas.
Please note: The location of Chemical Clean Out, 1 September 9am-3.30pm has been shifted (500m south) from North Dalton Park to Fairy Meadow Surf Club carpark. Please allow for some delays and follow signage and traffic control.
