BlueFloat Energy is seeking early-stage community input on the South Pacific Offshore Wind Project. Below is an extract from their media release, which you can download here.
BlueFloat Energy has announced a series of community drop-in sessions on 14, 15 June as it re- launches the South Pacific Offshore Wind Project. The Project will be located off the coast of the Illawarra region of New South Wales, between Shellharbour and Clifton, within the anticipated offshore renewable energy zone in the Pacific Ocean.
The Project will sit approximately 14-30 km off the coast, comprising approximately 105 floating wind turbines with a capacity to generate 1.6 GW, which is the equivalent of powering over 825,000 homes.
The site was selected for its strong and consistent wind resources and close proximity to the Illawarra region’s existing industrial base. The Project will create significant local economic benefits with thousands of local jobs required during construction and hundreds of ongoing jobs in operations and maintenance.
Once the offshore wind zone is declared by the Federal Government, BlueFloat Energy will apply for a Feasibility Licence, which allows for environmental studies to be completed, as well as assessment and planning approvals over an estimated five-year period. Construction is planned to commence early 2028 with the Project being fully operational by early 2031.
The Project responds to the NSW Government’s climate and energy action goals of establishing a reliable, affordable and clean energy system for future generations and will contribute significantly towards the NSW and Commonwealth Governments’ commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
BlueFloat Energy has emphasised that early engagement with the community is crucial to success, as well as the ability to co-exist with other industries like tourism, fishing and resources.
