Julie’s Garden Seat

Fifty-seven years ago. That’s both a long, and a short, time.

57 years in this little town we call the Burgh. Imagine the changes. The little white house behind the pub, the walls chuckling at the sound of another baby born. Coal fires in the Metter, warming a Struggle Town miners’ cottage. Lilyvale’s railway station – gone! The Co-op. Crawchie Day. Mrs Braggs wool emporium. Holidays in a shack down at Bulgo. A dip in the big dam after school. Horses tied up outside the shops. Ladies in white at the Bowling Club. The Band Hall burning down.

And 57 years ago, a young Julie Fowler moved into Helensburgh.

This is her, sitting on her garden seat, enjoying the autumn sun. Not just any garden seat. This one has sentimental value, and brings so many memories bubbling from her heart. It was a great pleasure for your Men’s Shed to take care of the restoration of this precious thing for Julie, a gift from her son.

Memories are wonderful things, and wondrous in how they sometimes arrive; a scent from a scrunched leaf, shadow’s painting a wall, the way the moon licks the windowsill beside your pillow…

Do you have a memory? Perhaps you would like to share it. We love to hear people’s stories. And we love to help preserve their memories. Bring them in to the Shed.
