Invest in collective well-being with Healthy Cities Illawarra

By Kelly Andrews, CEO of health promotion charity Healthy Cities Illawarra

Healthy Cities Illawarra – established in 1987 – primarily exists to prevent chronic disease and increase health and well-being for the whole community.  Chronic diseases are the leading cause of illness, disability and death in Australia; illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

We know that more than 80% of an individual’s health is caused by factors outside of health care – the World Health Organisation estimates that 80% of heart disease, stroke and diabetes and 40% of cancers could be prevented, and while treatment in our over-stretched health system is expensive, investing in prevention programs is cheap – prevention reduces the cost of ambulances, emergency and hospital admissions, returning $14 for every $1 invested.

Healthy Cities Illawarra initiatives offer crucial steps towards preventing chronic diseases and fostering overall well-being. Our programs aim to create urban environments that prioritise physical activity, access to nutritious food and mental well-being, addressing the root causes of chronic illnesses.

By supporting Healthy Cities Illawarra, you champion a paradigm shift in community design that encourages active lifestyles, making exercise a seamless part of daily routines. Walkable neighbourhoods, green spaces and bike-friendly infrastructure not only promote physical health but also contribute to reduced air pollution, mitigating environmental factors that contribute to chronic diseases.

Moreover, supporting Healthy Cities means advocating for equitable access to health resources. These initiatives strive to eliminate health disparities by ensuring that all community members, regardless of socio-economic status, have access to nutritious food, healthcare facilities and mental health services, just to name a few.

Investing in a Healthy Cities approach is an investment in our collective well-being.

It signifies a commitment to a future where chronic diseases are minimised, healthcare costs are reduced and communities thrive. Your support can catalyse transformative change, creating environments that empower individuals to make healthier choices and fostering a society where well-being is not just a personal aspiration but a shared community value.

So, if in 2024, you are looking for ways to support a happier, healthier, more equitable future, perhaps follow Healthy Cities Illawarra on Facebook, Instagram, X, or LinkedIn and be a catalyst for a healthier, happier, and more vibrant tomorrow.
