A Letter to the Editor
I’m Dr Danielle Camer and I wear many hats. Some of which include being a mum, multi-award-winning picture book author, Eurovision tragic, and creative director.
When others find out my main day job is as a leading senior medical writer in advertising, I often receive a blank stare.
"I don’t know anyone who does that. What do you even do?"
Let me give you a snapshot.
Every day is different. In fact, each part of the day can be different. It’s fast paced, agile, and chaotic yet satisfying.
I could be writing the words for a TV ad for nerve pain, then a brochure about an asthma puffer, followed by a cow drenching product in the afternoon (this actually happened one day).
I’ve spent the past week writing educational materials aimed at oncologists about a treatment for bladder cancer. Next week, I could be writing about a therapy for rheumatoid arthritis.
My words must be crisp, with a tone that is on-point. I know that everything I write will impact patients in some way. Patients are always at the back of my mind whenever I write. It is my role to make sure they receive the best care. That their doctor, specialist, nurse, pharmacist or other healthcare professional has been educated with the most up to date medical information, backed up by clinical evidence, so they can make the best disease management and treatment decisions. When writing for patients, it’s my job to make sure they clearly understand the material they have been given for their condition and encourage them to be strong advocates for their health.
I love what I do.
I was honoured to be named a finalist in three categories for this year’s Women Changing the World Awards.
The Women Changing the World Awards Ambassador Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and Dr Tererai Trent’s powerful call to action aims to awaken hearts and inspire the people of the world to come together to forge a brighter path for all.
Dr Trent explains, “These exceptional women are here to awaken hearts, give permission to recapture dreams and inspire the women of the world to come together to forge a brighter path for all. The rising of women is the awakening of everybody.”
One of the categories I am in the running for is “People’s Choice - Health and Wellbeing”, which recognises my work as a leading senior medical writer and ongoing advocacy work for melanoma awareness and fundraising for the Melanoma Institute Australia. As this is a global award, I’m going to need a lot of votes from around the world. I’m calling on the Illawarra for your help.
If you’d like to help me get votes (please?), here is all you need to do. Follow this link, go to “5. Health & Wellbeing”, drop down box to select “Danielle Camer”, fill out details for "9.” (voting is limited to one per person). Then click “DONE” (and keep your fingers and toes crossed for me!)
Voting closes on 10 March. The winners of the 2025 Women Changing the World Awards will be announced at the Park Hyatt London on Thursday, 3 April.
