Visiting the beach has always been a popular past-time. Seventeen beaches stretch out along Wollongong’s shoreline, making a visit to the beach a possibility for the majority of locals.
Most of us don’t stroll along the sand fully clothed, however, that was not always the case. Luckily these images of North Wollongong Beach have survived, providing a glimpse of the correct beach attire circa 1900.

The Local Studies Section of the library has added more than 39,000 images to our Illawarra Images Collection. However, we are always on the look out for something new.
If you have any interesting snapshots of the Illawarra that you are willing to share, please contact the Local Studies team at Wollongong City Libraries. Phone 4227 7414 or email localhistory@wollongong.nsw.gov.au
