What’s on at the Writers Centre

Did you know that 12-18 October is Global Climate Change Week? The South Coast Writers Centre has teamed up with University of Wollongong's Sustainable Futures Committee to present a program of events that are focused on finding inspiration, community, and connection, to mark the week.

Dr Kat Mikac

On October 9th, young writers can take an inspiring eco-walk along Coledale Beach with local ecologist and nature writer Dr Kat Mikac. These workshops, for ages 10-13 and 14-18, include a fieldtrip to the beach, followed by a micro-fiction story writing workshop, inspired by nature.

Then, co-presented with Collins Thirroul, Tim Hollo will speak at Ryan's on Wednesday 12th October about his new book, Living Democracy: an ecological manifesto for the end of the world as we know it, in conversation with author of Together We Can, Claire O'Rourke .

You can ‘Swap It Like It’s Hot’ at SCWC's clothes and book swap event with Lady Moon Productions on Sunday 16th October. Come along to unburden your closets of unloved clothes and books and give your shelves and wardrobe a fully sustainable style rejuvenation.

Once school returns, our Young Writers Program reconvenes for the final term of 2022. Ten-to 13-year-olds can join our writing community on Wednesdays from 4-6pm at Coledale Hall. The classes focus on developing the craft of writing, learning new techniques, exploring and sharing all kinds of writing in a fun and supportive way.

Graham Thorburn hosts Coledale Film Club

Don't forget the Coledale Film Club, which runs on the first Saturday of each month! Hosted by director Graham Thorburn, it is open to anybody interested in watching and discussing films. October’s Film Club will screen The Apartment, a 1960 American romantic comedy-drama film directed and produced by Billy Wilder, starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine.

Finally, if you’ve always wanted to write fiction but have not known where to begin, the SCWC are hosting a foundation course 'Tools To Begin' with the support of Wollongong Library, to help you develop the confidence to do it. In this three-month course facilitated by experienced writing teacher Dr Rosemary Montgomery, you will be given fiction’s basic tools in an atmosphere that gives you hands on experience and plenty of low-key, constructive feedback.
