Theatre calls! 5 shows to see before Christmas

Many local theatre companies are gearing up for their final shows of the 2023 season, so we've compiled a list of the top five shows to see before year's end.

1. Shakespeare in the Garden – A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Merrigong Theatre Company

Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream outdoors at the Wollongong Botanic Garden, directed by the artistic development manager of Merrigong Theatre Company, Leland Kean, is a great night out for the family. With shows running until November 26, this adaption of the classic text features an original score by Kay Proudlove and contemporary costume design by Katja Handt. The characters are recognisable as Illawarra locals, including the Mechanicals who dress as tradies and wear classic Aussie Bunnings hats. Picnickers can buy grazing platters.

2. The Wolves

Rising Arts Productions

The Wolves by Sarah DeLappe explores adolescence, identity, competition and growing up. Watch the raw, unfiltered conversations of a girls’ soccer team as they warm up, navigating the challenges of life as a teenager. The Wolves, running from November 24-26 at Side Door Theatre, is directed by Sophie Bentley and produced by Rising Arts Productions. If you know someone who loves soccer and theatre, this is the perfect gift for them.

3. Thirroul Music Festival

Various venues, including Anita's Theatre

Now in its 4th year, Thirroul Music Festival is a one-day celebration of Americana, country, blues and indie music on 3 December.  With music to suit everyone's tastes, including Zion, a local grunge rock band, and Earth Wind and Choir, a community-based choir, the festival promises to entertain all. Presented by Love Police, Spunk Records, Cheatin Hearts Records and Anita's Theatre, Thirroul Music Festival is a great activity for all music lovers on the South Coast.

4. Rhys and Joel's Family Christmas
