Start your film career with a Screen & Media course at ITeC

The Illawarra has plenty of opportunities for those who want to learn how to operate a camera and create great films. Screen and media trainer Tyrone McCrystal, an animator and editor from Tarrawanna, shared some brilliant suggestions about where to begin if you’re new to film, as well as a great course that is about to start at Illawarra ITeC. Read on for industry insights.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background in Screen and Media?

I had always been interested in film from a young age – making home movies and shooting events for school. When I was 16 or 17, I was offered the chance to study a Cert III in Animation, IT and Digital Media. From there, I continued to study Screen & Media for three years. During those years, I've had chances to work with some great people, entered a few film festivals and even became a freelance animator/editor for bands and other clients until landing at ITeC, delivering Cert III in Screen and Media.

I kept up my original passion and still animate on the side.

What is involved in the course at ITeC?

Here at ITeC, we offer a course in Cert III of Screen and Media, covering most aspects of film and digital media from script writing, vision and sound editing, audio recording, lighting and even experimenting with 2D animation. We cover the stages needed for pre-projection on a project like storyboards, documents needed for a shoot etc. As well as postproduction things like editing, effects and Foley recording in our sound studio.

We also have a great theatre where students like to try out the stage lighting and use the facility as a set/location for their projects.

Can you share some success stories?

I've had some students go on to continue their education in film and going out to make their own projects. I recall one student even entering some of his photography work into multiple art shows. I believe he now shoots skate videos and live gigs.

What advice would you give to anyone who is aspiring to create a career in Screen and Media?

The best thing to do is study, practise and get experience. Build up a demo reel and portfolio. Also, surround yourself and network with people who are as passionate in the field as you are. Grab a camera or phone, go out and shoot something and don't be afraid to show what you've made. Entering festivals and social media is a good tool for getting your name out there.

Growing up, my mates and I would film almost every weekend and most of the time we didn't even plan anything, we just did it. Same goes for animation. Learn the techniques and practise.

Are there any additional resources or groups people can get involved in to develop their skills?

Screen Illawarra frequently offers workshops and networking events for people keen in the industry. As well as multiple social media groups who occasionally meet up.

It's good to find friends in the field who you can learn off and gain experience from.

As well as tons of online tools. The industry standard Adobe is always offering new tools and updating their programs for newcomers.

If someone is interested in signing up for the course, where can they find out more?

So, the next Cert III course is scheduled to start on the 21st of August, but we do accept enrolments from up to two or three weeks after the start date. We are located in Coniston.
