Darcy Fisher's debut single marks new beginning

Wombarra singer-songwriter Darcy Fisher has just released her debut single.

Darcy wrote Undercover Lover while travelling through Europe and what started as a simple jingle in her mind blossomed into a full jazzy cabaret track.

“I had been journalling for a while and I was flicking back through my travel journal, and I just wrote, at some point, Undercover Lover,” Darcy said.

“It had a ring in my brain that sounded good.”

Darcy grew up in Wombarra as part of a family immersed in music and theatre. Her father, a life-long performer, was a major influence, sparking her passion for the arts.

“I've been performing with my dad since I could speak,” Darcy said.

“I knew from a very young age that I wanted to sing as a career and as my lifestyle.

“I loved the glamour, I loved getting dressed up, I just really loved it forever.”

Darcy made her official musical theatre debut when she performed as Mary Lennox in The Secret Garden while in year seven at The Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS).

At 18, she decided to study musical theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2020. As the Covid pandemic took hold of the world, Darcy's newfound isolation proved to be challenging but ultimately rewarding.

“That was super intense and it was amazing,” Darcy said.

Upon returning to the Illawarra, she immediately went on the hunt for auditions, landing the role of young Bonnie in Bonnie and Clyde at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre. Covid forced the play to be postponed from 2021 to 2022, but Darcy received rave reviews for her performance.

These career milestones are all the more impressive when you consider that Darcy suffered a broken back at the age of eight, she has sustained two slipped discs, and undergone spinal and hip surgeries, as well as ongoing treatments, such as injections and scans. Due to pain and discomfort during the production of Bonnie and Clyde, she realised her time on stage might be drawing to a close, prompting her transition to a music career.

“I had a realisation where – eight shows a week of dancing, carrying things and all of that – the physical thing doesn't really work for me after my spinal injury,” Darcy said.

With a new focus on her music career, Darcy returned to Wombarra, where she recorded her first demo of Undercover Lover with the help of family and friends, especially her dad’s friend, Danny Elliott, who provided instrumental support.

Darcy then moved to Sydney for even more opportunities and she debuted Undercover Lover during her first performance at Low 302 in front of a sold-out crowd.

“I really wanted to make it happen,” Darcy said.

“I thought, 'It's not gonna happen in Wombarra in my parents' living room'.”

Darcy is planning to release her second song, called Grocery Store, and she will perform at Lazy Thinking Bar in Dulwich Hill, Sydney on September 30.

“I'm very excited for it to come out because I think it'll have a different response to Undercover Lover,” Darcy said.

Undercover Lover is streaming on all platforms, including Spotify.
